The dining room is another gathering space after the living room. Similarly, the dining room is the space in the house where family and relatives gather to have their meals and for other purposes.

Therefore, during House Planning, the family should decide whether to have a separate 'Dining Room' or 'Kitchen cum Dining Room' or 'Living cum Dining Room'. In modern times, due to the high price of land cost or less space availability 'Living cum Dining Rooms' suits well in every house.  

General Points to Consider

• The Dining Room should be located near the kitchen, or where the dishes are washed so that meals can be served hot and can be transported easily thus reducing mishaps.
• The kitchen, Dining, and Living areas should be created near each other because the movements in these spaces are more than in any other room.
• Adequate space should be provided for the movement of persons around the dining set.
• Provision must be made for storing Linen, Crockery, Glassware, etc.
• The dining set should be designed or selected as per the need and space availability. 

Location As Per Vastu

The recommended location for dining rooms as per Vastu is West and North-West. You must eat facing toward these directions i.e North, West, North-East, and North-West. Avoid eating facing towards the South and South-West Directions.

Now, you might be thinking or maybe later you will get hit by the question, i.e. the dining set is designed in a way to place chairs in all four directions, then how will you manage to avoid eating facing towards South and South-West direction?

There are only two ways to avoid eating facing towards the south and southwest directions, 

• First, you can design or select a dining set of two-way directions.
• Second, you cannot remove the chairs, as it will ruin the design of the space planning, so to avoid using them you must use those chairs for some other purposes instead of eating, that's also for a short period. 

Dining Room Sizes

The size of the dining room varies as per the size of the dining set and the number of people going to use it.

Recommended minimum room sizes are (Lx B)

• For 1-2 person  - 8ft x 7ft
• For 4 person     - 11ft x 8ft 6in
• For 6 person     - 13ft 6in x 9ft 2in
• For 8 person     - 15ft x 10ft
